BURBANK, Calif. -- April 12, 2002 -- NBC scored another convincing Thursday victory among adults 18-49 last night, led by time-period-winning encore presentations of "Friends" and "ER."
According to preliminary "fast affiliate" in-home viewing statistics from Nielsen Media Research, a pair of "Friends" encore telecasts (7.8 rating, 23 share among adults 18-49, 16.8 million) led the 8-9 p.m. hour among adults 18-49 over CBS' first-run episode of "Survivor: Marquesas" (7.6/22 among adults 18-49, 19.4 million viewers overall).
The 8-8:30 p.m. ET "Friends" rebroadcast (7.7/24 among adults 18-49, 16.8 million viewers overall) improved by a spectacular 51 percent over the 18-49 result for a comparable "Friends" encore aired on the same night last year (7.7/24 vs. 5.1/16). For its hour, "Survivor" was down 35 percent year-to-year (7.6/22 vs. 11.7/34).
NBC was also No. 1 among adults 18-49 at 9 p.m. with "Will & Grace" (8.6/22 among adults 18-49, 16.5 million viewers overall) topping the first half of CBS' "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" rebroadcast (7.8/20 among adults 18-49, 21.6 million viewers overall from 9-9:30 p.m. ET). And from 9:30-10 p.m. ET, NBC finished a close second in the 18-49 category with "Just Shoot Me" (7.8/19 among adults 18-49, 14.7 million viewers overall), which retained a strong 91 percent of its 18-49 lead-in from "Will & Grace."
NBC dominated the 10-11 p.m. ET hour with an "ER" rebroadcast (6.9/19 among adults 18-49, 14.8 million viewers overall), which achieved its second-best encore 18-49 rating this season (out of nine rebroadcasts). Compared with a two-hour encore episode aired on the same Thursday a year ago, last night's "ER" was up in 18-49 rating by a stellar 41 percent (6.9/19 vs. 4.9/13).
For the night, NBC was up by 55 percent versus its rating with an all-encore lineup on the same night last year, while CBS was down 35 percent, ABC was down 24 percent and Fox was down 6 percent. CBS aired a first-run "CSI" and a "CSI" encore on the same night last year, while last night's lone episode was a rebroadcast.
For the 46 nights since the close of the Winter Olympics, NBC has been up or even on 37 nights, more than the other three major networks combined. CBS has been up or even on 21 of 46 nights, Fox has been up or even on 9 of 46 nights and ABC has been up or even on 5 of 46 nights.
Preliminary nightlong averages among adults 18-49 are: NBC, 7.6/21; CBS, 6.2/17; ABC, 2.5/7; Fox, 1.7/5. In overall total viewers, April 11 preliminary averages are: CBS, 16.7 million; NBC, 15.7 million; ABC, 8.0 million; Fox, 3.9 million.
I'm not sure about Survivor, most of the people that watch TV haven't really been interested in this season, but, I could be wrong?
